I recently took a trip to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom with my mother. We were due for a fun mother/daughter day trip. While we were there, we decided to explore what I think is the most underrated area of the entire theme park. Tom Sawyer Island is forgotten by some, but loved by many. It is a short little raft-ride away from Adventure Land and is an area that is wonderful for kids, adults, and full families all the same.
Tom Sawyer Island is a self-guided adventure. You get off the raft and follow paths that lead to windmills, playgrounds, barrel bridges, and caves (my favorite.) There is even a fort across a suspension bridge but, unfortunately, that part of the island was closed the day my mother and I were there.
One could say the entire island is a giant play area, but the actual playground is adorable. The jungle gym is build like a ship and right next to it are a few picnic tables under shady trees. I would say, this spot is a total gem for any family with young children, who may want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the theme park while they enjoy their lunch in the shade. It’s a haven where the kids can expel mass amounts of energy while the parents rest their feet.
While we were sitting at the picnic tables, enjoying our snacks that we had brought into the park, there were cute little squirrels just hanging out right around the table! They didn’t seem scared of humans at all.
To be honest, this part of Disney just makes me want to bust out the old VCR and pop in my VHS of “Tom and Huck” from when I was a kid. You remember that movie, right?! JTT was all the rage back then.
Have you ever been to Tom Sawyer Island at Disney World or Disneyland? What was your favorite part of the island?
