Is it just me, or is 2019 flying by for everyone else, too? This month I am going to be focused on accomplishing four main goals to help get more organized! I am prioritizing my computer above all else because, as most of you know, I will be leaving the country in a couple months and I want to make sure that all of my important computer-related things are clean & crisp and easy to navigate.
Goal #1
I want to organize all of my digital media onto an external hard drive. Trust me, this sounds like a much easier task than it is. I apparently have a bunch of things saved onto “the cloud” (insert thunderous sounds of doom here), and I’m not sure how to remove them from it. I also have a bunch of stuff either saved to my laptop or saved to my hard drive that just need to be reorganized into folders and sections. I’d like to get to the point where everything is on the hard drive so that my computer stays completely uncluttered.
Goal #2
Type up a spreadsheet of podcast episodes to listen to. Okay- I realize this one sounds a little random, but I promise it isn’t. I recently did something I had been wanting to do for quite some time, and became a Patreon supporter of my favorite podcast (“The Minimalists”) and with that monthly donation I gain access to a private podcast that they do every week. While I’m on my deployment, I would like to go back and listen to all of their podcasts from the past, while also listening to the new ones they put out each week. This spreadsheet will be a way for me to mark off the ones I’ve listened to, while continually adding the new episodes to it each week!
If you haven’t heard of The Minimalists, they are two gentlemen who talk about how they weren’t happy with their lives of excess and decided to live a more simple and meaningful life. They talk about how you can start to move forward on that type of journey yourself, if you’d like. They have a documentary out on Netflix, multiple books, a blog, and a free podcast every Tuesday! I highly recommend these guys. They are pretty cool and have helped a lot of people get rid of stress in their lives causes by over consumption and holding onto things they could just let go of (tangible, and intangible.)
Goal #3
While we are on the topic of minimizing, my third goal is to minimize my social media. I already don’t have a Facebook or a Twitter, but if you follow me on Instagram I thank you so much for your support! And you may have heard about my recent disaster with Facebook–they wouldn’t let me create an account because they don’t think I am a real person, and I refused to send them a copy of my driver’s license.
Instagram is becoming less and less attractive to me. The algorithm they use is not in anyones favor, and while initially the pull of the app is thrilling, I’ve come to see that the only people who see your content are those to whom Instagram wants to show it, not necessarily the people who follow you and who want to see it (Don’t even get me started on the hashtags.) When I started this blog I was thinking I’d like to be one of those Instagram style bloggers out there who are part of the LTK.IT app and all that (check out my first blog post, and you’ll see what I mean) but as I continue down my own blogging path, I find that isn’t the type of blogging I want to do, and so while Instagram is fun, it’s not as important to me anymore.
My goal is to minimize the amount of people I’m following. I had been following a lot of the bloggers because I wanted to be supportive of them and I think it’s great that they are out there trying to make money being advertisements for companies. You do you, girl! But by following a ton of them, I don’t see photos from my friends and family anymore (that dang algorithm!) And while I respect the whole selling-stuff/making money aspect of these accounts, for the most part they are all advertising the same exact things, and so if I follow a few of them, I’m likely going to see the same items. My intent as a blogger is to just blog about my lifestyle, my style, and other aspects of my world as a hobby and not as a job. And I truly hope that my favorite style bloggers, who I will continue to follow, don’t completely lose their own unique style that led me to liking their content in the first place.
Goal #4
Reorganize my Pinterest boards! Pinterest is quite possibly the greatest website ever, but man, oh man is it easy to just have a completely unorganized bunch of links. There are so many things to like and recipes to try, and blog posts to read… It’s a hot bed of wonderful internet destinations. However, over the past year or so my boards have become jumbled and I just feel a little overwhelmed if I ever try to find something that I had pinned. Also, on some boards, my style has changed, or my vision of how to decorate a certain room has changed, and so it’s nice to just go through and get rid of things that I wouldn’t use anymore.
There you have it, folks! My four goals to accomplish in August. I would love to hear from y’all on what your goals for this month are. Do you set monthly goals? How about quarterly goals? Share your thoughts on this post and more with me in the “comments” section below!
